Martins Bank opens a
Branch at Billingham in 1930 in what appears to be a large detached house.
The Branch lasts for forty years, being closed by Barclays shortly after the
Merger with Martins. Barclays already
has its own Branch at Billingham. A
sub-Branch at Queensway is more of a success story, not only making it
through the 1969 merger, but also remaining open today. For our feature, we go back to 1960 and the
retirement of Billingham Manager Mr N H Alderson, another in the long line of
Martins Bank Managers to have served the bank for well over forty years… At
the end of April, Mr. N. H. Alderson retired after 44 years' service in the
Bank, the last 16 of which were spent as Manager of Billingham branch. Mr. Alderson requested a minimum of formality on his
leaving, but Mr. T. Farnaby, second-in-command at the branch, presented to
him on behalf of the staff a cut-glass bowl and a travelling clock. The following evening Mr. and Mrs.
Alderson entertained all members of the staff to dinner at the Vane Arms
Hotel, Stockton-on-Tees. Earlier in the week Mr. Alderson lunched with the
District General Management at Grey Street, and Mr. Weatherill visited the
branch, taking with him the good wishes of Mr. Alderson's many friends on
Tyneside. Mr. Alderson entered the Bank in
1916 and served at different times at Crook, Newcastle upon Tyne, Bishop
Auckland, Barnard Castle and Stockton on-Tees. |
